Internet Freedom
After reading an e-mail about the fight for open internet sent by my professor I really started to worry. In an earlier post I did mention that control of what is displayed on the internet would be a good thing for children yet I do not agree with Congress giving power to companies that will produce gatekeepers and constraints on the internet. Knowledge is power and the more people who stand up for our rights on keeping our internet free the more likely we can hold them off for longer.
If every time I clicked on a link I had to pay twenty-five cents I would not be able to afford to use the internet. Think about all the university students who use the internet for their essays and projects, then think about all the money they pay for tuition and now think about their costs for housing as well. On top of all of that imagine, just imagine if we had to pay on top of paying for internet, paying for certain sites and paying for certain information. Society would riot. The problem is not enough of us now are doing something about it. Yet surprisingly enough in the e-mail it said that in 2006 1.5 million Americans called on Congress to keep gatekeepers off our Internet and that Last year, more than a quarter-million people sent comments to the FCC and opened up cell-phone networks to user choice and innovation. Which is impressive but money buys power these days and it may not be enough to save us.
Go to the website below and do everything in your power to save the internet or we are going to have some bigger problems on our hands.

Commercial for Mainstream Media
This is A commercial for "The Mainstream Media." By comedian Jon Lajoie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV5UTHRx0a4
If this commercial was shown on television would you turn off your set? Does the sentence “cause you’re not paid to think, were paid to do it for you” ring true?
While yes this commercial is extremely funny it is scary how truthful it actually is. And no, this is obviously not a real commercial and it would never be because why would you put on your companies network a commercial about how they are controlling you. I think this might be more specific to watching news on television because I watch TV sometimes and only tend to watch the shows I like and I am still just as smart as I was before. I do agree though that television can sometimes sue your judgment on the way you think about things.
For example for most people if Oprah says something on her television show people use it conversations as fact. Just because she is a millionaire and has doctors and award winning actors and actress and book authors and her show doesn’t mean everything she says is true. She has writer doing it for her and if you watch carefully most of her shows are actually advertising something, if not a product then Oprah herself.
This little YouTube video is so important for people to listen to because it is straight up the message of how we are being taken over in less then 2 minutes. The more people know the more people can help stop it.
“Brought to you by people who have more power then you do.”

The Reverse Axe Effect
Please watch video links!

This is a commercial for the very popular man's body spray Axe. In the commercial they have gorgeous women running the forest in itty bitty bikini's to get to what looks like either the last man on earth, or the smartest man who has all the Axe up and been spraying himself for days. The music is epic and the cinematography isn't half bad.

Now this is obviously an independent version. Some and almost most women actually hate the smell of Axe. This video I think is its own form of culture jamming, while it is a little blunter about it then I would like. It could use some subtly to be considered culture jamming but none the less this is an interesting take on the product.

In this commercial the message is clear that if a beautiful woman smells there new fragrance that she will be so overwhelmed and not be able to control herself. This woman is going to meet such a hot guy in this classy restaurant but yet she is so taken with the smell she has to grab the waiter’s ass? I don't think this is realistic. Maybe it is not even suppose to be realistic and I am looking to deep into its meaning but I find it degrading and offensive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHGIGvukaKE&feature=related
This last one just confuses me. I just don’t get how they are emphasizing how good their product is. He falls through his shower floor, ok. Starts leading a dance class? Weird, but ok. Naked and the girls seem to be not jarred at all? This commercial was actually banned from the air because of the nudity.
The point is that the companies marketing technique is actually better then the product. Goes to show you that you can sell almost anything as long as you know how to sell it. If I followed what advertisements like this said and believed everything I saw on television I would be pretty mad when I found out that the body wash was horrible or that Axe actually repulsed women.
You would think that they would have enough money by now to take a survey of the consumers. Then they might find out the truth. And maybe stop those horrible commercials. Because everyone knows, behind every man’s body spray there is a girlfriend who makes him get it.

More bloggers out to help you
So obviously we know that blogging is become a new creative form of expression. Blogging is even being referenced in television shows and movies. For example the movie Juno that came out in 2007 has an expression I have been using, "Honest to blog?" mimicking the "Honest to God?" phrase people use quite often.
Main stream pop culture for the time being won't die but if you read blogger posts it is sure being bashed. Yet none of these blogger's do anything about it. They sit behind their computer ranting and raving, yet just sitting. What I found is a productive group of university students that blog to help students with budgeting, financial planning, saving and other issues of true importance for a university student like me. Not blogging about how that movie sucks and how corporate America is taking over (which none the less, IS taking over).
This is a new wave to the university students scene. Other students who understand and actually care. Refreshing isn't it?
